Ignacio Ortiz Vasquez, an unauthorized Mexican immigrant, confessed to the act days before the scheduled start of his trial.
A Mexican immigrant and father of three has confessed to strangling his girlfriend in her bed as she slept, just feet away from where their son was sleeping in 2015.
Authorities say Ignacio Ortiz Vasquez, 42, this week pleaded guilty to charges of first-degree murder and second-degree endangering the welfare of a child in connection with the death of 27-year-old Yuri Cruz.
On Sept. 12, 2015, police were called to the 2300 block of Jacques Avenue in Rahway around 2:30 a.m.
They found Cruz unresponsive. She was pronounced dead at the scene.
Vasquez said in 2015 that the child was his son, and that the child now lives with Cruz’s parents. Vasquez said he has two other children living in Trenton.
He also revealed he was an unauthorized immigrant from Mexico with no passport.
Authorities have not said if they have identified a motive for the killing.
Vasquez had previously asked that his bail be reduced from $1.2 million to $500,000 because he had no prior felony convictions.
The judge rejected the request.
Vasquez faces 30 years to life in prison. His sentencing is scheduled for June 8.
