In the NJ 2nd congressional district, a Democrat is about to win for the first time in more than 20 years.
The incumbent, Frank LoBiondo who has represented the district since 1995 decided not seek re-election which has made the seat very competitive.
Jeff Van Drew is a moderate Democrat who is running against an opponent whose racist remarks have caused him to lose state and national support. A poll conducted by Stockton University had Van Drew up by 23 points.
Van Drew, a dentist, has been a State Senator representing Cape May and Cumberland counties since 2008. He previously served in the New Jersey Assembly from 2002 to 2007.
He is running against Seth Grossman who was previously a councilman in Atlantic City and an Atlantic County freeholder.
Van Drew is viewed by many as moderate to conservative. On the campaign trail this year, he has constantly been touting his desire to find common ground with the opposition. During his career in the legislature, he has been against gun control, protecting the environment, gay marriage, and raising the minimum wage. He also believes in the death penalty in certain cases.
Furthermore, he said that he would not vote for House Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi to become Speaker again because he believes the party needs “new energy”.
However, he has voted to fund Planned Parenthood.
In the primary, he beat out the more progressive candidate Tanzie Youngblood with a stronger organization to secure the nomination.
Grossman is viewed by many a racist due to certain social media posts he made as well as his comments saying, “the whole idea of diversity is a bunch of crap and un-American” caused the National Republican Campaign Committee (NRCC) to withdraw their support from Grossman. He also called Kwanzaa a “phony holiday”.
When asked about the controversy, Grossman vigorously defended his comments but said he was not a bigot.
Van Drew called them “distasteful”.
Grossman is a die hard supporter of Trump. He uses his slogan “Make America Great Again” on his website and defended his anti-immigrant policies.
At a public forum, Grossman said regarding climate change, “”The climate’s been changing for 5 billion years. Go ask Noah!”
During a recent interview Van Drew pointed out that Trump wishes to drill offshore for oil which is likely to great harm the coast for which the region depends on economically to generate business during tourist season.
Furthermore, he called the controversial hearing of Brett Kavanaugh for the Supreme Court said “it reminds me of when innocent Jewish and black men were lynched 100 years ago based on unsubstantiated accusations of a single woman. That’s what it reminds me of. It’s a modern-day lynching as far as I’m concerned.”
He has not backed down from such comments.
Van Drew came out against Kavanaugh.
In addition, Grossman fervently opposed federal aid in the wake of Hurricane Sandy and to invigorate the lagging South Jersey economy which was hit severely by the Great Recession.
Trump won the district in 2016 however Barack Obama carried it twice.
There are eight counties in the district which spans a great deal of the length of the Jersey Shore, including Atlantic City and Cape May.
