Tuesday, Rutgers became the second Power 5 program to offer Fairfield (Ohio) running back JuTahn McClain, 5-9, 175-pound three-star with burst. But will a close family friend help get him to Rutgers?

Tuesday, Rutgers became the second Power 5 program to offer Fairfield (Ohio) running back JuTahn McClain, 5-9, 175-pound sophomore three-star with burst. Despite hailing from the Midwest, McClain has an idea of what Rutgers has to offer, due to his relationship with a close family friend.

“A good friend of the family played basketball when she went there,” said McClain, who also holds offers from Cincinnati and Kentucky. “Her name is Myia McCurdy. She said it’s where I can get a great education and that Rutgers changed her life for the better.”

Hence, Rutgers certainly has McClain’s attention following the offer, as he plans to experience the program and academic side of the school first-hand.

“I’m sure I’ll make a visit, but I’m not sure as to when it will be yet,” he said.

McClain, who missed his freshman season due to injury, isn’t rushing to any early conclusions about his recruitment, and plans to carefully vet all of his opportunities. But, so far, Cincinnati — his lone non-Power 5 option — stands out most.

“I have to do research and visit all three of them,” he said, “but UC stands out right now because it’s my hometown school.”

One of the Midwest’s top running backs for 2020, and playing for one of Ohio’s top football programs in Fairfield, McClain certainly hasn’t seen his last offer; not after running with balance, power and putting on a show in 2017 — generating over 700 yards and seven scores on the ground and 13 receptions for 195 yards (15 yards per catch).

Whether Rutgers’ strongest tie to McClain will prove strong enough to bring him to the east coast remains to be seen. But the Scarlet Knights are positioned to take their shot. Offensive line coach AJ Blazek gets the assignment as he recruits the Midwest. Rutgers also has an offer out to Fairfield’s Erick All, a 6-4, 225-pound rising senior tight end, who has shown interest.
