Former Rutgers QB is ‘in driver’s seat’ to earn starting job at new school

Gavin Wimsatt is in a strong position entering the final training camp of his college career.

The former Rutgers quarterback, who transferred to Jacksonville State this offseason after one year at Kentucky last fall, is currently “in the driver’s seat” to win the starting spot for the Gamecocks this fall, head coach Charles Kelly said Tuesday at Conference USA Kickoff.

“He’s shown good leadership, good poise,” Kelly said. “We’ll see how that race continues.”

Wimsatt is one of two quarterbacks that transferred to Jacksonville this offseason. Cade Cunningham, who has played two games in three college seasons split between Marshall and Memphis, is his main competitor.
