Family sues after man, 21, drowns at the Jersey Shore with lifeguards on duty

The family of a South Jersey man who was a two-sport athlete in high school is suing Wildwood Crest and its beach patrols, alleging negligence when he drowned two years ago.

Joseph Volm, who attended Paul VI High School, died almost exactly two years ago, in August 2023, when he was dragged into the ocean by a rip current, according to a lawsuit filed in Cape May County Superior Court.

He was 21.

The family alleges in the four-count suit that lifeguards in Wildwood Crest failed to warn beachgoers about the hazardous conditions. Doing so could have saved Volm from drowning, the lawsuit alleges.

The lawsuit asks a jury to award compensatory and punitive damages to Volm’s estate.
