NEW YORK — Yankees starter Marcus Stroman thought he had his former teammate, Mets slugger Juan Soto, dead to rights in the first inning. He was wrong.

With the Yankees up 2-0 in the first, after getting Soto to fall 0-2 in the count, Stroman tried to make him chase — a big mistake. The next pitch, a cutter that hung over the plate, ended up in the seats 393 feet away. A game-tying, two-run home run, his 21st, surpassing first baseman Pete Alonso (20) for the team lead in home runs.

“I was trying to get it just up and in, and it just kind of backed up,” Stroman told reporters after the game. “He’s one of the best for a reason; he’s extremely locked in right now. He’s kinda all over anything, so he’s just an incredibly hard (at-bat).”
