New Jersey Senate advances bill to establish digital driver’s licenses and ID cards

TRENTON, N.J. — The New Jersey Senate Budget and Appropriations Committee has approved amended legislation that would require the Motor Vehicle Commission (MVC) to offer digital driver’s licenses and non-driver identification cards as an optional alternative to physical copies.

Senate Bill 1297, approved with committee amendments on Thursday, directs the MVC to develop secure digital licenses and IDs that meet stringent standards for personal data protection. Applicants must meet the same criteria as for physical cards and may be charged a reasonable fee for the digital version.
